Storyline Abducted on a rainy night in 1988, the obnoxious drunk, Oh Dae-Su, much to his surprise, wakes up locked in a windowless and dilapidated hotel room, for an unknown reason.

This isn’t to say that Oldboy is a cold movie; if anything it’s highly emotive at every turn. A lot of care is put into creating Dae-su, as he changes into a beastly yet captivating agent of vengeance, then into someone who might actually have the hope of becoming a better human being.

Although most movie remakes are nowhere near as fantastic as the original, we all still want to give them a chance to prove us wrong. The American remake is solid and takes some creative liberties that do not stray too much from the spirit of the Korean version. I prefer the orginal's story and production much more. However, since the Korean film is such a master piece in my book, it's hard to compete with and this is a respectable remake.

Lee's "Oldboy," like Park's, obeys its own illogical logic (a hotel room hallucination starring Lee's brother Cinque has the goofy randomness of a joke in a David Lynch movie). The whole thing flows as dreams flow, linking situations to other situations and images to other images in a seemingly free-associative manner.
